I noticed that all the kids who went on the tree planting expedition were boys. What did the girls do while the boys were out doing "manly" science? Sit around and plan how to snag a junior forest ranger?
International Paper (yes, the Southern Kraft division) had a mill in Panama City, Florida, where I spent part of my youth. We knew we were getting close to home when we were greeted by the mill's aroma resembling rotten eggs and dirty diapers.
I wonder who drew the comic... the style is generic '50s ad-comic, though someone might be able to distinguish a particular artist quirk. The lettering is clearly by Ben Oda. The panel with the seemingly giant squirrel looks straight out of "Mark Trail."
rnigma, I also spent a good deal of my youth in the southern part of Georgia, where the influence of the paper mills lingers over the piney woods like a shroud, a sulphurous, stinky shroud. You get used to it though, and hey, once you're past it, you're at the beach.
Wow, that was one long, dull comic book. But it did remind me of a Chinese saying that I like: "The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best is today."
